Retro awesomeness

Versione italiana qui

The post title refers to one of my current obsessions: looking up retro 'instructional' videos on YouTube. Oh.My.God. they are wonderful! Where do I start? How about with "How to be well groomed" (1949), where we follow Dan and Sue's day to see how perfectly arranged they always are. Stepford kids or something - see for yourself:

And here is a 1932 gem on "The mystery of marriage", which makes even mold sound high-minded and romantic -

I do love YouTube...and will be posting more of my favourites soon. It's freezing over here - like water on the ground frozen over freezing - and the only reason it hasn't snowed is that the skies are beautifully clear and blue. *Shiver* Luckily my boxes are arriving on Tuesday (calloo! callay!) so I will have proper winter clothes and will be able to cope. (This also means I will suddenly have tons more books and clothes and stuff to tidy away somehow....)

Lots of other good things have happened this week:
~ I got to see Laura today!!! That was really, really nice. Needless to say I miss you all....
~ I found a supermarket that does home delivery. My life is now 10x easier. At least.
~ I discovered that the Princeton YMCA has a gym, and swimming pool, and does aqua aerobics classes, so I am not doomed to balloon dangerously due to over-consumption of granola bars and Reeses cups.
~ I had friends from work over for dinner and it was very pleasant, the food worked out despite my dodgy oven, and I really enjoyed the opportunity to make food for more than just one person.

So all in all, a pretty successful week. Up next: flying to Dublin on Wednesday to meet up with Nick!

[sorry to keep it short - laundry and other mundane tasks are calling]

I love YouTube!

Yeah, I'm still here

Versione italiana qui

I meant to write something in mid-week, to prove that I was still alive - but not much of note had happened really! My weekday routine is pretty boring - I get up far too early in the morning, go to work, try to stay focused and awake through the day, come home, and stare at the list of my thesis corrections in the hope that I can stare them down rather than having to actually do them myself (hint: it doesn't work). Then I waste time on the internet, or watch an episode of my shamelessly beloved ANTM, which has the added advantage - as if it needed any more! - of being shorter than a film, and therefore doesn't keep me up too late. And then I go to bed. Lather, rinse, repeat. It's not so bad, but I'm still trying to get used to the early mornings, and I've finally been tackling the corrections on my thesis, corrections on my thesis, and that makes me depressed because the more I look about them the weaker the thesis seems, and I wonder if I shouldn't have just taken more time over it...but what's done is done, eh? I just have to make the best of the situation.

On a happier note, I've met the two second year postdocs at work, both of whom are nice and fun and close to me in age - but one of them is about to have a baby (literally in a couple of weeks) so she may be MIA for a while.

Also, I was in New York over the weekend for a combination of work (a nice NLP symposium on semantics, basically a big love fest for NLP people - not bad!) and pleasure (dinner & hanging out on Sunday with my cousin, including the Natural History Museum, which was so much fun!!). I was reminded yet again that NY is an awesome city, it was great to get out of Princeton and be in urban surroundings, and I should really make the effort to go over more regularly, since it's definitely worth the 1-hr train ride and it puts me in a good mood, even if it does impede my exciting weekend routine of food shopping and laundry and reading the Saturday Guardian online (oh how I miss the paper copy!!).

I've invited seven people for dinner on Thursday night - fingers crossed everything will work out and I'll have time to make all the arrangements/tidying the house/buying the food to cook/etc. Should be fun though!

E poi vado a letto.

Optimism

Versione italiana qui

Ok, so it's not a very inspirational title - apologies. But that's what I feel right now, the post-election euphoria has not died out in any way, and there are still things about it that make me tear up - and I'm not going to apologise for that: hey, if Jon Stewart can get away with being misty eyed, then so can I!!

I'm not going to even try to say anything profound or intellectual about the election, or offer sage political commentary - these are just jumbled impressions, from the vantage point of being in the country, something for which I am very grateful. Though I am very disappointed about the referendum results in California - it would have been truly a victory of tolerance all round had that gone the other way.

I went to watch the election results at the politics department of Princeton University, which had organised a panel followed by tv-watching and snacks for all. Open to all, not just students of the university - how enlightened is that?! Also, as an aside - their lecture theatre has swivelly, tall, leather chairs for each person. And shiny expensive looking desks. When I see these things, I can maybe understand why sometimes Rhodies who come over from Ivy League universities are a bit disappointed...Anyway.

It was awesome to be in a student environment again, and the atmosphere was brilliant - a lot of the people around me were politics grad students, and quite a few had been campaigning and canvassing until that morning, so they were really, really invested in the outcome...Now, I don't want to detract from the merits of people I've lived with who have actively participated in local (town, rather than gown) politics in Oxford - but I hope they won't be offended when I say that this was on another level entirely, the energy and drive that they gave off was awesome, in the literal sense of the word. It was political engagement that came from true passion rather than calculation (here I'm thinking of OUCA/OU Labour hacks), maybe that's what made it so attractive. And everybody was wearing Obama t-shirts and other paraphernalia with pride - or apologising for not wearing one - can you imagine anything like that happening with Gordon or David Cameron?!

So there is optimism because there is going to be a new administration, led by someone who, among other things, is an ex academic and therefore gives a sense of resassuring intellectuality (intellectualness?). And because this election - drawn out as it has been - seems to have revived, or sparked, a new activism and engagement in people, showing that it is possible to shake off the apathy, the sense of impasse that seems to have come over other countries that I care about, such as the UK or, until recently, Italy (the student protests are anything but apathetical right now!) - and that feels great.

I shall stop pontificating now!

In Italiano

Yes he can!

Proper post to follow soon. But I felt the need to celebrate!

The Times They Are A-Changin

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

A working woman

Allora....this may turn out to be a long post, apologies!

So, since I last wrote there have been various events of note, such as

- starting work, finally!
- Halloween!
- trips to the supermarket!

All deserving of exclamation marks, as you can see.

I'm going to be fairly vague about work in this blog, but suffice it to say that I was happy with the way the first couple of days went. It helps that I have my own office, everyone is very nice and friendly, the setting is absolutely stunning (acres of woodland, pretty trees, bright sunshine), and my mentor/boss seems very helpful and supportive and interested in my doings. Also, to fully seal my entrance into the Real Working World, I have a magnetic badge with my face on it which I Must Carry At All Times and need to swipe in and out with always. AND we can access the stationery cupboard freely, obviously using sensible restraint - but still! My office has a whiteboard and FOUR new markers (take that, linguists/philogists!) too, and a second desk. I was very amused by my reaction to the computer - it runs Windows rather than Linux (though it turns out there are unix servers we can do stuff on) and I was so disappointed - a far cry from when I joined ComLab and was so dismayed to find I was expected to work in a unix environment! (yes, ok, I know this is a bit sad, but bear with me)

The main downside about work at the moment is that I am still relying on the kindness of others to get to and from work. From tomorrow I have an arrangement with someone who will pick me up at 7 am (which means getting into work around 7.15/7.20) and leaving again at 3.40 pm. !!! Ok, so the amount of hours is the same as 9-5, but.....eeeek! I suppose there are some good things about getting home earlier, such as not feeling like all you have time for is eating and crashing, and time to work on my thesis corrections (ugh), and it will be easier to Skype people in Europe....but it's going to take a lot of readjusting....

I was very excited about Halloween (I know we're supposed to feel anti commercial festivities, but what can I say, I'm a sucker....) and had some cardboard pumpkin decorations on my door and had bought chocolates to give out - I was so pleased when I got a more or less steady stream of little trick-or-treaters from 7 onwards. Ok, so I felt a bit old and maternal, but it was fun, even though none of the costumes bowled me over. I'm sure we put more effort in when were little....

The next event in the calendar to be excited about is, of course, the Election, but we shall not speak of it in case we jinx it.

Finally, I discovered I can cycle easily to a biggish supermarket nearby, which is a great relief in terms of buying food that is not too overpriced and unnecessarily organic and biodynamic and enzymatically enriched and whatever else the local whole earth store peddles. I was so happy to find that this country is not afraid to sell veal, something that I missed so much in the UK! Less easy to find - in fact, total fail so far - are tissues that are more than 2-ply thick. Seriously, how hard can it be??? It's driving me crazy.

This evening I went to the Italian Cultural Center here to listen to a concert by this group, who play traditional songs from Abruzzo. It was rather good! (funny how the further away I get, the more I feel the need to show Italianness...) I was also hoping to meet new people, but the average age was rather older than mine, and they all seemed to know each other already, so I failed in that. Maybe next month, when they will have the 'Polenta Festival'.

Finally, a plug for a website which I've been pillaging recently: Librivox, which, as the website shows, provides free mp3s of books in the public domain - I've been listening to all sorts of stuff from there and it's absolutely wonderful, I recommend it to you all.

I probably won't post again til after Tuesday. Please send blue thoughts our way.

Allora....questo post potrebbe uscire piuttosto lungo, chiedo scusa!

Dunque, dall'ultima volta che ho scritto ci sono stati vari eventi notabili, quali

- finalmente cominciare a lavorare!
- Halloween!

Mandateci pensieri blu, please.
